Yosano Akiko recommended that we tell the ‘middle of the story’ when writing tanka, and here we have a good example of that technique. We don’t know where or when the story takes place, but it doesn’t matter. The snow is high and bags of food are being carried on horseback; the situation must be a difficult one.

When a poem lacks an overt human prescence, we call it "objective", but in truth, there is no such thing as "objectivity" in poetry, as this tanka shows. The topic of this poem is hardship, and there’s no need for melodrama or overt commentary to express it. The adroitly chosen details say everything that needs to be said.
